Applications

Remote control

Using one device to control another device. Examples include:

  • Seeing who is at your front door when the door bell is pressed and being able to let that person in should it be a good neighbor.
  • Turning on the heating before you arrive home or checking the thermostat settings.

File synchronizing

Keep all your files synchronized between your devices, such as desktops, laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, network attached storage (NAS), etc. In addition, backups can be kept so that information loss can be minimized.

Personal Cloud Computing

Since all devices are seamlessly connected, it is not necessary to run heavy computations on mobile devices just because that’s where the result is required. For instance, a personal trainer application can run on your desktop using information gathered from your scale and runners wrist watch. The instructions can be read out to you on your mp3 player.

Medical Applications

There are more and more medical sensors and other medicine-related technologies becoming available now and they also need to communicate. Their readings could be sent to your GP/doctor leveraging your network connections. A common framework, such as a PN, can enable different medical sensors and other non-medical sensors to cooperate with other equipment, such as treadmills, etc. Furthermore, using any of your devices, including your smart phone or laptop, you could yourself access the sensor readings. Software could be installed that is able to collect all this data from all kind of sensors and sources and give you health advice.

And many more…

Here is a small sample of devices you could connect to your PN. Use your own imagination to dream up what you could do with your PN if they were connected: coffee machine, fridge, printer, stereo system, car, electricity meter, LED lighting.
